Carved Hittys

Posted in Uncategorized on August 30, 2008 by Hitty Jean

I really didn't think it could happen.  I was pretty sure that carving was one facet of Hitty that I would never be interested in.  And here I am today, putting the finishing touches on another (!) Hitty I have carved.  Yesterday, I came upon a photo of four of the last five I have completed:

The first one (l-r) is still at home where she remains un-named, though her eyes have been re-done.  We call her Hitty New, and that may stick if she doesn't say otherwise.  She was the fourth Hitty I carved.  The Bitty is in Upstate New York and I *believe* her name is Gwyneth.  (?!)  The third is living in Oregon.  She wasn't quite finished in this photo, so she's all "peggy."  And the fourth is Hitty Veronica, Dassa's birthday Hitty.  They all look so different.  My latest carving - my 8th Hitty! - is no exception.  (But she needs a few tweaks before she'll be ready for her debut.)

On the flip side…

She made it home!  Happy, full of tales.  Into the arms of her just-as-excited sisters and Mommy.  I was sure I would be a sobbing mess on this first day of school.  But Dassa's enthusiasm about Kindergarten has been contagious.  What can I cry about when she is so…HAPPY!  Okay, admittedly my eyes well up now and again.  But it is part nostalgia for the baby days and part pride for the growing up girls they are.

A Tale of Two Schools…

Yesterday was the first day of school.  It was Pit~Pat's first day at Middle School…and Tater's first day upstairs at Middle School.  Pitter was nervous.  But she insisted she wasn't.  Tater was and remains concerned about homework.  But, off they went yesterday, decent breakfasts eaten, teeth brushed, new backpacks at the ready:

It's so nice that Pit~Pat has Tater for moral support.  And being the big sister that she is, Tater is full of advice.  Off they went:

Meanwhile, it was Dassa's first day of Kindergarten.  I have never seen a child so excited.  Sure, she had her fleeting nanoseconds of anxiety, but they were fleeting.  While preparing for school, she was flitting around the house, a bundle of backpack-wearing enthusiasm.  "I love growing up!!" she exclaimed.  Dassa just had to pack her backpack, like the big sisters:

And, off she went (though Dan and I got to come along…)

While Mrs. KLB talked to the grownups, Dassa got to color.  An entire series about a brother scaring his sister.  Hmmmm…  She was the first to present her teacher with a drawing this year.  How cool is that?!  (Not the scary series, thankfully, but a sweet pet-store drawing she had made at home…phew!)

Upon their return from school, Tater and Pit~Pat gave rave reviews.  Middle School is done well in this town and their resulting enthusiasm reflects that.  Thank goodness.  After dinner last night, we had our annual "School Bus Cake."

Yesterday was exciting, but today?  Even more so.  After the big girls were off to school, it was Dassa's turn.  It is her first real day at Kindergarten.  Bus, lunchbox and all!  She didn't want to eat breakfast.  It would make her late.  She didn't want to use the bathroom.  It would make her late.  Drink all her milk??  That would make her late.  Finally, she couldn't take it anymore.  "Can't we just go early??!!"  Which we did:

And there goes my baby:

Her first school bus ride.  My funny girl's main focus was getting her seat-belt buckled.  Ummmm…Dassa?  What about the un-buckling part?  I have visions of her being stuck in that seat and riding around all day…

Now what?

Nitty~Gritty vs. Hitty 15:16

My Tater…she's a Pisces – a true fish.  She loves water, and when she is swimming, it is almost impossible to get her attention because she is underwater as much as possible.  Upside-down under water.

And the "Blank" twins also seem to enjoy upside-down-ness.  Is it any surprise that this is how Tater "put them away"?  (Or is this just what Bittys do when we aren't looking?)

The weather here has been beautiful for the past few days.  We're enjoying our last official weekend before school begins.  Yesterday was grand.

Tater and I did some carving together on the front stoop (with Dassa playing with her hamster…and singing the entire time as she often does.)  I took a few carving breaks to read to Dassa.  Carmine is her current favorite:

Soy *Cheeze* pizza for an early lunch:

We drove to Pawbee's house to pick up Pitter from an overnight…

We had what is likely our last swim of the season:

The girls made a *wave* pool:

Then, time was up…Dassa really has enjoyed the pool.  Not quite swimming yet, but maybe next summer…
Of the three girls, she was the one who was the most sentimental about our last swim:

There were plenty of signs of Autumn along the way home.  Even the angle of the sun's rays shouts, "Summer's ending!  Autumn's coming!"
Some red leaves:

…a mowed hayfield…a wonderful smell!

There's a chill in the air at night.  I love it.  Autumn is my favorite, and when Summer shows signs of ending, my spirits always lift.  However, this year I am simultaneously holding on to Summer for my life, as I know in a few days ALL three girls will be off to school…

I have big plans to organize and clean, some fun sewing projects to keep me busy…and I think maybe I'll just keep on carving…

Back tomorrow with the penultimate Nitty~Gritty post.  Sixteen weekdays seemed like forever when I started.  I can't believe there are only two left.

And the *babies* are doing fine, as is the bite that "hamster-momma" gave me yesterday.  Life, indeed, carries on…

My pie was done…and smelled wonderful!

Meanwhile, Hitty Jean was just firing up her oven…
