Forest Dichotomy…A Duel of Two Photographers

We went for a walk in the woods yesterday.  I thought it would be fun to try out some different camera settings while we hiked.  But Dassa had other plans.  Turns out she also wanted to practice her photography skills.  Trading off didn't work.  I had to practically tackle her and hold her down to gain posession of the camera.  (Okay, exaggerating, but only a little…)  What I found this morning was a delightful tale of a Momma and her girl with the same goals, but different ways of seeing things.   So…I'll put my pictures first, and then Dassa's.
For starters, there were lots of dogs to meet and greet:

Cuteness and beauty were all around:

There was something to see at every turn…though a quick glance at your perfectly pink fingernails?  Now that's something to see!

We were both struck by interesting elements of nature:

When asked to comprimise her vision and take a picture of something I thought was photo-worthy?  Well, let's just say that the finger in front of the lense was not an accident:

In the end, Dassa went through two sets of batteries and took hundreds of pictures.  Tater and Pit~Pat asked to use the camera also, but were met by the stony glares of two budding photographers.
It was a fun walk.

Gardening without Sneezing

My allergies are serious business this time of year.  Unfortunately, so are the weeds.  Nevertheless, I popped on my mask today, swallowed my pride, and tackled the front garden.  Then, I kept the mask on until I was just ready to jump into the shower, scrubbed down, and presto!  Gardening without sneezing for two days straight afterwards.  It's a miracle!!

In other happy news, there are plenty of acorns this year:

Moonflower

Imagine my excitement when I saw the above in amongst my Morning Glories yesterday.  Could it really be that I had finally raised some *easy to grow* Moonflowers!?!  Come late afternoon, the verdict was a resounding *YES!*

IMG_2272

It was sooooo exciting!  This flower is bigger than my open hand and it bloomed all afternoon, into the evening and through the night.  As a matter of fact it is only begining to fade this morning.  I can't find any more Moonflower buds – yet – but that's okay.  I enjoyed this one immensely.

A Visit With Hitty…Fraud Uncovered

Posted in Uncategorized on August 26, 2009 by Hitty Jean

Hitty March is getting restless, what with all this proper parlor sitting that's been going on.  "It's a great day to go exploring along the dry river bed, don't you think?"

IMG_2269

Hitty Jean agrees, so off they go…but no sooner are they there than Hitty March is distracted by a voice coming from under the old Hydrangea bush:

Some spying is in order.  She climbs up into the bush, as high as she dares (which is pretty high!) and peers down:

And this is what she sees:

IMG_2257

"Why, aren't those the Bakery Elves??!  I thought they were lost at the North Pole!  Hitty Jean has been worried sick over them…sort of…I think."
Hitty March climbs down to tell Hitty Jean what she has discovered.  "There is another Hitty under there, and she is telling stories to – Get this!!!  You'll never believe it!!  The Bakery Elves!!"

Hitty Jean isn't in the mood for spying.  She merely busts in on the lovely storytelling session and starts screaming.  Which frightens the dear sweet elves and the Hitty.

"Poor dears.  Let me clear this up," says the new Hitty.  "You Elves run along home now."  The Bakery Elves are shaken, and feel they should explain themselves.  But Hitty Jean is looking pretty ticked, so they decide to  hurry home:

Well, the Hittys have a lot to discuss.  Turns out the Bakery Elves were just joking about the Dark Magic, and when they found out that Hitty Jean was actually serious, they were afraid she would be angry, so they decided to trick her into believing that they were stuck at the North Pole.
"I believed it, too!" exclaims Hitty Jean.  "Why didn't they come to us and explain their fraudulent behavior sooner?"  Well Hitty Zee (for that is the new Hitty's name) explains it all.  It turns out she is a wonderful storyteller, and by days end, Hitty Jean, Hitty March and Hitty Zee are all great friends:

Hitty Jean will deal with the Elves another day…

Jewel Weed

Jewel Weed found today...

The Jewelweed brightens woodland shade
By wearing precious gems.
Its flowers look like shiny earrings
Dangling from their stems.*

(Its ripe seed pods burst open with the slightest touch…Its leaves look silver when dipped in water…juice from its hollow stem relieves poison ivy itch.)

Wilting…

It's hazy, hot and humid.  The dreaded "Three H's."  Not much happens here when it gets like this.  Hopefully, my next house will have central air.  Or a pool?  A lake, even…  Wouldn't that be divine!!?!!  Perhaps I could move seriously North.  That would be nice, too!  At any rate, the "Three H's" and I don't get along well…

♥Thanks, friends.  We had a perfectly wonderful time.  Zeke wishes he were still there (as do I!)
